Concerns Regarding AK SB 262
Dear Senator:
My name is Jon Decker and I am a senior fellow at the Parkview Institute supporting economic freedom. I am writing to express my strong opposition to Senate Bill No. 262.
While the intention of protecting Alaska’s youth is commendable, this legislation amounts to unprecedented overreach that undermines the fundamental rights of parents and threatens to stifle the personal and educational development of Alaska’s youth.
The core of our concern lies in Section 45.50.650, which mandates a blanket prohibition on social media accounts for residents under the age of 16. By imposing a state-mandated ban, SB 262 strips parents of their primary authority to assess the maturity and development of their own children and make informed decisions on their online activities. No two children are alike; one may possess the digital literacy and emotional maturity to navigate online spaces – and benefit from age-appropriate experiences – that a peer might not.
In a free society, the government should not act as a “super-parent.” It is the right—and the responsibility—of parents, not the state, to make informed decisions about their children’s online activities. This bill effectively declares that the government is better equipped than Alaskan families to determine what is appropriate for their households.
This bill would deprive Alaska’s youth of enriching opportunities to advance their education, discover their talents, and build skills that will prove invaluable to their future careers. Prohibiting social media access until age 16 ignores the reality that digital fluency is a prerequisite for the modern economy. This bill puts Alaskan students at a competitive disadvantage compared to peers in other states.
The Parkview Institute believes in empowering families through education, rather than overly-restrictive mandates that deny the basic truth that social media can be incredibly beneficial in helping one discover their talents and interests. I urge you to support parental discretion, and the economic future of Alaska’s youth, by opposing Senate Bill No. 262.
